RE: Biodeisel for Tow vehicle?

Okay, so based on what I am reading, it sounds like if we should choose the 'o7 3500 Dodge dually we need to stay away from bio. If we can find a used one with 60 pt. inspection and written statement from dealer saying that there has been no fuel contamination, would this be a safe TV for our 34 ft. TT? It has a 6 sp. trans. with a 6.7L Cummins. I know there were some problems with this engine at first but if this one checks out at the dealership and we have our mechanic check it out too, would we be okay? Safety is our primary concern.

RE: Biodeisel for Tow vehicle?

Towin'- Do you notice a difference when pulling your RV using the biodiesel rather than the diesel? What kind of RV do you have? We will probably use diesel most of the time but I was wondering how hard it is to switch over? Is there just a switch somewhere in the cab of the truck? Does the diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel all go in the same tank or are there two separate tanks?

Biodeisel for Tow vehicle?

We are looking at towing vehicles and have found a '07 Dodge 3500, Big Horn Edition with a 6.7 Cummins. It's tow ready. It's diesel but has the optional biodeisel too. Anybody know anything about pulling a TT with biodeisel fuel? I know very little about biodiesel other than the fact that a guy in our town makes his own from his garage...seriously.

RE: rv service plans

I agree with everything that has been said but I would like to add that if you or your spouse are not at all handy with fixing things, it might be worth the piece of mind to do a service contract. I found one with zero deductible for five years. My DH doesn't have available time for handywork and his daddy wasn't much of a teacher in this arena. If something is messed up we will be paying a mechanic. I hope I never use it but it is so worth my piece of mind for less than $7.00 a month. Find out how long the company has been around. You want a reputable company...don't trust anything you cannot research. I wish you the very best. Please don't forget to pray about your decision...so much more important than any info i could offer you.

RE: recommendations for toilet chemicals?

Joanne- Thank you for your response...another female with knowledge of small children. This is the exact response I have been waiting for. I was really worried that this tp would be rough but I trust a female so we will give it a try. Are you using chemicals or just lots of water? My kids are so young that I worry they won't remember to use lots of water when they flush. Do you add fabric softener to your blank tank?

RE: recommendations for toilet chemicals?

kfc- Thanks! I will check that brand...TST. I don't recall that being mentioned yet but there have been so many responses that it is hard to keep up. I hate to sound so stupid but do we just start flushing WAY before we start "going"? Is that what you mean by putting 5-10 gallons in before you flush? Not clear on that. Or do you mean that we should have some extra gallons of milk jugs that are filled with water and pour those down before flushing? I have 3 small ones under age 9 so I really need to know how to handle this in order to "talk it up" and explain the importance of extra water in the bowl before flushing. Thanks for your help!

RE: What you need to get started

Written words don't allow us to express ourselves like our actual voices do so please understand that I am so thankful for any advice I am getting in this forum but I am just trying to explain that us newbies are D-U-M-B and we need you to be specific...okay?

RE: What you need to get started

Okay...not to be disrespectful at all but some of you guys who are experienced rver's need to understand that the rest of us may not have any idea what you are talking about when you say things like "electrical dog bones" or "something safely to block the trailer securely if you disconnect". Also, we are already is near panic over the fact that what we thought was going to be a fun hobby is now going to cost us a TON of money so instead of just reminding us, could you offer some ways of dealing with the expense. For instance, where you shop for your supplies or what you think is necessary and what we can add on later?

RE: Good Sam vs AAA

Can't comment on the AAA but if you are in an area where you will be not be using your RV due to extreme temps you should know that Good Sam allows you to suspend the collision portion of their insurance (u still get comprehensive coverage though)if the rv will be stored for over 30 days. All you have to do is call them and they will deduct that amount from your monthly or yrly fee and reimburse you the difference. Also, the GS insurance will replace your TT at MSRP for it brand new if something happens within the first 5 years (doesn't depreciate). After five years, cost of replacement is what you actually paid and will continue for the life of the policy. That impressed me!

Is a generator necessary if I never plan on boondocking my TT?

RE: What you need to get started

Get a leveler set. Take your TT to a level parking lot. Place one leveler on the back/center of your TT and one near the back rear on either side. Once you get to your campsite you can just check to see if the bubble is centered in the middle of your levelers rather than taking a guess that your TT is level and then walk around inside with it shaking. You can get a set of levelers at CW for $7.77. They come will adhesive backing that you peel of to stick them to your TT...better than screwing them in. By the way, all CW prices mentioned are retail but if you pay for the President's Club membership ($20)you can get each product you purchase at 10% off for an entire year...worth the discount for newbies who have so much to buy at first. As a past tent camper you probably know that CW is not the "end all to beat all" but they do have certain camping goods that cannot be found elsewhere and the club discount is applied to online purchases if you need to have something shipped to you rather than visiting a store in purchase. Good luck and God Bless!

RE: What you need to get started

Continued...get some good tire chocks; not the cheap, plastic ones for less than $3. I have heard some bad stories. CW has tire lock chocks made by BAL model #28000A that run $36.66...not cheap but these were recommended to me by someone who has rv'd with the same pair of chocks for over 30 years. Safety and reliability are worth the price. Depending on the size of your TT, you will either need 2 or 4 chocks. Get a drinking water hose...not the garden type bc the garden type has chemicals that build up and are not safe for drinking out of. CW has a "Never Kink" 25ft. for $13.88. Also pick up a "Hi Flow" water regulator($11.66) and a hose protector ($6.66).

RE: What you need to get started

Pucka1378- We also are moving up from tents to a TT...should be delivered here on Monday. We don't even have possession of our TT yet but I will tell you a few things we have begun to gather so we can spread out the expense of fitting out our rig. Those veteran rver's should feel free to correct me if I should mention anything you don't agree with. The obvious and $$$ towing necessities have already been mentioned but you will need some less expensive items that are also very necessary. First of all, get a good 20ft. sewer hose. CW has a Deluxe Bayonet Sewer Kit that includes pre-assembled hose and sewer fitting for $44.99 but you will also need to get a clear view 90 degree sewer adapter w/lugs ($11.10)to attach to the sewer hose. The reason you need this is bc it will allow you to see when all the dark water has been dumped. Pick up a rubber sewer doughnut (aka sewer seal) for$4.44 while you are there too. You may not need it at all campgrounds but it's better to have one than to wish you had one when you need it. You can search recommended toilet chemicals on this forum and get all sorts of good advice for that but buy them at Walmart along with the tp cause it will be cheaper than CW.

RE: First purchase advice

Our TT doesn't come with a ladder but does have a walk-on rubber roof with a 12 year guarantee. When I asked the dealer if he recommended the ladder as an opptional add-on he said no so I didn't do it but now I am wondering if I should have added it anyway. We plan on taking it in for winterizing and before the camping season opens each year. Won't the mechanics check or any problems on the roof? Does the roof need to be checked more than a couple of times a year? If so, couldn't we just lean a regular ladder up next to the TT and get up that way?

RE: recommendations for toilet chemicals?

I did check out the Scott's 1,000 tp for septic systems today while doing some grocery shopping at Walmart. It looks awfully thin and didn't feel very soft when I squeezed it. I suppose I could stand it for long weekends but I can't say I would ever put it in my house. Ouch! Economically speaking, I think we will go with the blue stuff for now rather than the Geo method or other things suggested...although I appreciated all the input. I can't fathom using just water with three kids under the age of 9...two are boys. Their bathroom here at the house stinks no matter how often I clean it. Ick!

RE: Weight concerns for our new TT

Travis- I would like to share a Camping World experience with you. We went to the Camping World in Denton, TX about a month ago so we could start stocking up on necessary supplies before our rv is delivered. Having never owned an rv, I was having a difficult time deciding btn different brands of sewer hoses so I stopped an employee to ask for help. She said she had never been camping or stepped foot in an rv in her life. She could not help me. I was shocked but still determined to find some help so after wandering the aisles I found another employee. She too admitted that she didn't camp and had only stepped foot in an rv once in her life. My husband was not happy and I was in shock. The nice guy next to me seemed to have sympathy in his eyes so I told him that we were clueless and asked if he owned an rv. BINGO! He and his father-in-law walked us around the store for 45 minutes showing us what we needed and telling us when we could save money and buy elsewhere. He even gave us his card and told us to call him anytime if we have questions. Just because someone is employeed by Camping World doesn't mean they know anything about camping...sad truth. I have found that the best help has come from those who actually own or have previously owned rv's...not dealers...not salespeople...not employees at camping stores.

RE: Weight concerns for our new TT

StuartW- Thanks for the rvtowingtips website. I will check it out. I few days ago I found www.rveducation101.com and remember that they offer dvd's on that website such as "RV Care & Maintenance", "Travel Trailer/Fifth Wheel 101", and "Winterizing & Storing Your RV". Do you know anything about these dvd's? Are they any good? Towing was covered on one of their dvd's. We do have two friends with travel trailers who live within minutes of us. Both have offered to come and show us how to tow, park, hitch, etc. We live two blocks from a school with a large parking lot so we can practice some things there once we have a safe TV. They have also offered to sit in the passenger side and coach my husband around here on local highway drives until he feels comfortable. We also have a friend who owns a trucking company (18 wheelers). We plan on taking the TT there to get it's official weight as soon as it is delivered. We will take it back again after we have loaded it just to make sure that we are safely within our limits. Thank you for your concern.

RE: Weight concerns for our new TT

Travis- We are two peas in a pod! I too, may end up storing a TT bc we have discovered(thanks to this forum) we have nothing safe to tow it with and, like you, cannot afford a new truck. Check the used 3/4 tons. We are finding several to choose from and I feel certain that dealers will welcome us eagerly bc they need to move inventory right now. The silver lining? At least these forum friends of ours have saved us from placing our families is danger...soooo thankful we received this info prior to a serious accident. Good luck to you!

RE: recommendations for toilet chemicals?

StanleyandIris, Thanks for the explanation of "blue stuff" that many mentioned. i was clueless! I have seen these little packets at Walmart but don't recall seeing the yellow. I will have to go back and check for those...also looking into the Geo Method and other suggestions offered by other members. Thanks again!

RE: Weight concerns for our new TT

Just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has posted a response to my dilemma! This is an incredible forum with lots of knowledgeable people who truly care. I so appreciate each of you. To update you on our current situation...we are now in the market for 3/4 ton diesel with Quad cab...looking at Dodge and Ford's (used). We are getting a remarkable deal on the TT and have already made arrangements to have in stored in a cement floored garage so if worse comes to worse, hubby will haul our new TT to our storage place (5 min. from home)and at least it will be safe and clean while we look for a safe and suitable TV. Feel free to keep posting responses to this topic as I feel it is most helpful to all us newbies out there! Thanks and God bless you!!!
